BRUT
My design-led functional work is inspired by Brutalist architecture. My work is research driven, and arose from detailed exploration of a style that embodies and incorporates the Urban, Minimalism, Repeat Pattern, Clean Lines and Geometric Forms.
I produce utilitarian tableware, designed for use in the home environment. Stackable sets that become architectural compositions in themselves, pushing the boundaries of function through the recognised Brutalist characteristic of being ‘top heavy’. These pieces are designed and made enhance the experience of the user of these beakers.
My work embodies the brutalist aesthetic, where the materials and processes are enhanced rather than hidden. Brutalist buildings are cast in-situ, with seam-lines left visible and the concrete raw. The parallels with ceramic casting processes provide the opportunity to explore this aesthetic on a domestic scale.
My work is slip cast using stoneware slip. The innovation in my work process includes the addition of Nano stains to the slip to colour each piece, leaving the outside raw to represent concrete. Transparent glaze is added to the interior of the piece to ensure functionality. Fired to bisque temperature first and then fired to 1220 to vitrify the raw clay.
